As one of the pathfinder hospitals, a midlands NHS Trust has been working towards submitting a business case to Government for a new 300+ Women's Hospital on the Royal Infirmary campus

The campus has been developed over decades starting with the original Victorian buildings, many still in existence, with additions in the 50s, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

The campus was already struggling with congestion and restricted flows to the various hospitals and wings so when the idea of a new hospital, increased capacity and greater demand for supplies and consumables was first considered it became clear that a new approach would be required.

effective Consulting Group conducted surveys, gathered data and interviewed staff across a broad range of activities and services. End users were engaged from the beginning and a complete picture of the flows of people, vehicles and supplies was developed. Local repeated issues were considered and, as a result, a clear set of recommendations has been developed and handed over to the onsite facilities teams.

In total, 32 recommendations were discussed and agreed with the team. On site logistics, public and patients safety and goods vehicle access featured heavily in the project and recommendations.

Overall, hospital capacity can be increased and public safety can be improved.
