It is often thought that increasing the capacity of a warehouse will reduce productivity and generally speaking that is true. Increased storage density can lead to additional handling and reduced overall performance but when effective Consulting Group looked at the three RDCs of a national distributor it became clear that this is not always the case.
Process reviews, source and destination heat maps, sales analysis and alternative storage methods all played a part in identifying solid performance improvements across all three operations and greater storage capacity.
Process review showed unnecessary handling and repeated activities.
Heat maps highlighted excessive travel and wasted journeys
Sales analysis helped ensure the right products were in the right place and those that were obsolete were highlighted too
Once these improvements were in place the true options for additional storage capacity were clear and the business could start to implement the quick wins and develop plans for the more strategic ideas
